...large numbers of people from all over the Roman Empire would make their way to Bath.
As the Romans were building the Fosse Way which runs from the south west all the way up to Yorkshire, they had to cross the River Avon. In so doing, they discovered a hot water spring with a constant temperature of about 48ْ C. Soon, they had built a reservoir, baths and a temple and the town of Bath quickly came into being.
Visitors could take a bath (frigidarium) followed by a warm bath (tepidarium) followed by a hot bath (caldarium). The same sort of 'treatment' is recommended in today's spas.
The Roman Baths are awesome to visit at any time but during July and August, the best time is as darkness falls. Then you can experience what it must have been like 2,000 years ago as you walk along the ancient pavements by flickering torchlight.
If you’re planning a trip to see the Roman Baths, then it’s worth checking with Beechfield House as an ideal luxury hotel near Bath.
