‘Capability’ Brown created the splendid picture gallery in the 1760s. At the same time, he added a suite of state rooms in which you can still see the original wall-hangings and furniture, designed by Chippendale, Thomas Johnson, John Cobb and the Adam brothers.
‘Capability’ Brown also designed the superb gardens and parkland which now includes a 13 acre lake. The impressive Gothic bath house was also built by Brown. Some of the original trees he planted are still there and the massive Oriental Plane Tree apparently has a circumference of 240 yards.
The gardens are a delight and are renowned for the spring bulbs, magnolias and wild orchids.
