The history of Castle Combe dates back well before the Romans who, when they arrived, took over the hill fort above the village. Apparently, there was strategic value in the fort because it was close to that great Roman road, the Fosse Way. When the Normans arrived, they turned the fort into a castle, although nothing remains of it today.
Located on the very southern fringe of the Cotswolds, many of the houses in the village are many centuries old and listed as ancient monuments.
During the Middle Ages, the village prospered as an important centre for the wool industry, the By Brook providing the power for the mills. However, in recent times, the village has been a favourite location for film companies; Doctor Doolittle, Stardust and very recently, War Horse, directed by Steven Spielberg.
Castle Combe is a delight and a favourite with visitors to the hotel.
